PT/OT Students Need Caregivers to Interview

Dr. Nancy Carson with the MUSC Occupational Therapy program at MUSC is seeking caregivers to be interviewed by our OT and PT students this summer. The goal is for the students to gain new perspective and insight into the lives of people who are caring for a loved one.

Objectives include:

1) discuss the challenges and rewards identified from the interview experience

2) recognize the varied experiences and the scope of care partners

3) reflect on the role of OT and PT in supporting care partners

4) synthesis information gathered from the interviews into a presentation using a form of the humanities to reflect and better understand the experience of caregiving.

The students are in groups of 3 students per interview with a few groups of 4 students. Students will be reaching out beginning June 17 and will schedule interviews for some time over the following 4-5 weeks, the interview should occur no later than July 22, ideally the end of June or beginning of July.  The interview can be via Zoom or in person.

If you are interested in participating in this project please contact Alyssa Chestnutt (contact info below). Thanks..

Online Tool to help with Post-stroke Hemispatial Neglect

At our February meeting, our guest speaker was Nicole Mulcahy who brought us a great presentation on an online help she is developing for stroke patients. Please see her message below for details.  Please also consider checking it out and provide any feedback you may have. Thanks All..

+++++++++++++++++

I hope you’re doing well. As we’d talked about at February’s stroke support group meeting (which I thoroughly enjoyed!), I am creating a course for stroke survivors and their caregivers focused on post-stroke hemispatial neglect as part of my MUSC OTD program capstone project. I’m wondering if you might be willing to pass along the course to anyone in the support group who has this condition, or who may be interested in giving me any feedback on the course. The course consists of 6 short educational videos housed on a website I built. On the website, there is also a link to a Pre-Test to gauge baseline knowledge as well as very short Knowledge Check Quizzes to complete after viewing each video. There is also a Feedback Survey to provide general feedback on the course. In total, the course takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete. Or, individuals can choose to watch whichever videos they find useful. Video topics range from general info on post-stroke neglect (aka “left neglect,” “spatial neglect,” etc.), its impact, self-management/treatment strategies for use at home, etc. Now that I’ve recorded all videos and uploaded all content, I would love to get the course into the hands of anyone who might benefit from it!

Here is the link to the course: https://post-stroke-hemispatial-neglec.my-free.website/

I’m happy to answer any questions if needed. Thank you!

Best,

Nicole Mulcahy, OTS

You Matter: A Care Partner Psychosocial Wellness Education Course

Some of you may have met Emily Taylor at one of our stroke support group meetings. Emily is studying Occupational Therapy at MUSC and has a special focus on helping caregivers (that she calls care partners) take care of their stroke surviving family or friends.

She has developed an incredible help for caregivers on how to better care for our survivors and also how to care for ourselves. I think this course is must read for caregivers, especially new caregivers.

Please see Emily's message below and if you are a caregiver, please consider taking a bit of time to take this course. Thank you. - Rick
